원명은 '이 세상에서 저 세상으로의 순례여행'이라고 한다.
제1부는 1678년에, 제2부는 1684년에 출판하였다. 주인공인 크리스찬이 신앙에 발심(發心)하여 순례의 길을 걸어 많은 시련을 겪으면서 드디어 성도(聖都)에 들어서게 된다는 줄거리이다.
제2부에서는 주인공의 부인 크리스티나가 네 자식을 거느리고 남편이 걸어간 길을 뒤따르는 이야기이다.
꿈이야기 형식을 취한 우의(寓意) 이야기이다. 그러면서도 인물묘사가 선명하고 유형의 타성에 빠지지 않는다. 문체는 간결하여 흠정영역성서(欽定英譯聖書)에 가깝다. 그것은 스스로 “성서에서 떨어진 일이 없었다”라고 고백한 한 청교도의 문체에 잘 어울린다.
이 간결한 문체와 저자의 체험을 가득히 불어넣은 이 글은 저자 생전에 10판의 재판(再版)을 거듭하고 그 부수가 10만 부나 되었다고 한다. 선교를 목적으로 만들어진 이 저서는 저자의 사고를 초월하여 뛰어난 문학작품이 되어 근대 산문문학의 선구적 지위를 구축하였다. (참고문헌: 글로벌세계대백과사전)
