칸트의 대표적 저술 가운데 하나. '제2비판'이라고도 불린다. 이 저서와 분리할 수 없는 관계에 있는 것이 "도덕형이상학원론"(1785)이다. 따라서 두 저서의 내용을 아울러 서술하기로 한다. 말할 나위도 없이 두 저서는 도덕의 세계를 정면에서 밝히려 한 것이다. 여기서 비판되는 것은 순수실천이성이 아니라 실천이성이다. 유한한 인간은 이 세상의 행복을 얻으려는 욕심의 지배를 받아 이를 실천의 원리로 삼으려 한다. 그러나 한편, 내부에서 단호한 도덕적 명령(의무의 소리)을 받는다. 범인은 갈림길에 서서 어찌할 바를 모른다. 그래서 "실천이성비판"은 후자의 길(순수하게 도덕적 의무의 명령에 따르는 것)이 선이며 전자(행복의 지배를 받는 것)가 악임을 분명히 하는 것이다.
