『Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine』은 사상의학의 창시자로 알려진 이제마의 ‘동의수세보원’을 최초로 영역한 책으로 그가 정립한 사상의학의 이론과 그에 따른 치료법을 체계적으로 알기 쉽게 설명한 해설서이다. 또한 이 책에는 인체를 그 기질과 성격에 따라 태양, 소양, 태음, 소음의 사상으로 나누고 모든 질병의 변화는 체질의 특성에 따라 달라진다고 보고 그 원리를 상세히 밝혀 놓음으로써 누구나 이 책을 통해 인간 생리의 특수성을 이해하고 처방을 운용할 수 있게 하였다.
1996년에 출간된 이후 지속적인 수정 및 보완작업을 통해 개정 증보된 ‘동의수세보원’은 초판보다 이제마 선생의 뜻을 좀 더 근접하게 담아내기 위한 노력의 결실로, 한의학 분야에 종사하는 사람뿐만 아니라 자기의 타고난 체질을 알고 그에 맞추어 양생하고자 하는 일반 독자들에게도 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
