이 책은 수십 년간 UN 안팎에서 활동해온 여성운동가 윤순영의 경험과 생각들을 집대성한 책이다. 여성의 권리, 여성폭력, 지구환경, 경제개발, 건강권 등 여러 사회적 이슈들에 대한 그의 활동 경험과 통찰이 담겨 있다. 저자는 이 책을 통해 양성평등과 여성의 권리, 특히 사회적으로 취약한 여성계층의 권리 함양이 인류의 공동의 이익을 위한 것임을 주장하면서, 우리가 보다 나은 미래를 만들어나가기 위해서는 광범위한 사회 문제들에 대해 관심을 가지고 지켜보면서 때론 행동해야 함을 역설하고 있다.

A Feminist Look at Global Development and Social Issues

As a North Korean refugee, Soon-Young Yoon understood from an early age that people's destinies are connected to international events. This book is a collection of her reflections as a feminist who has worked both for the UN and for the international women's movement. Written through the lens of an anthropologist, these essays traverse the boundaries of being an insider and an outsider of the UN.

Yoon has seen the struggle for human rights in all corners of the world and has met people in urban slums and in UN offices. She urges us to look at the world through women’s eyes to understand why gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable populations, is essential to our collective good.

The stories in this book also reflect her belief that one needs to understand a wide range of issues in order to shape our common future. This book includes essays on ending violence against women and girls, finding the Earth’s balance, and claiming the right to social and economic development. Enclosed are stories of collective voices that are changing the world, glimpses of great women leaders, and the many identities of global citizenship.

윤순영

윤순영은 수십 년간 여성의 권리와 사회 이슈들에 대해 유엔 안팎에서 활동해온 여성운동가이다. UNICEF 동남아시아지부 사회개발 담당관, WHO 동남아시아지부 연구관으로 일했으며, UN 4차 세계여성대회에서 NGO 포럼 조직을 돕기도 했다. 또한 75차 유엔총회의 젠더고문단의 일원이자, 국제여성연맹(International Alliance of Women)의 유엔 대표로 활동했다. 미시간대학교에서 인류학 전공으로 박사학위를 받았으며, 이화여자대학교 방문교수를 역임했다.

Soon-Young Yoon is the UN representative for the International Alliance of Women and member of the Gender Advisory group of the President of the 75th UN General Assembly. As a visiting Fulbright Professor at Ewha Womans University, she helped establish Asia’s first women’s studies program. Yoon helped organize the NGO Forum at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women that brought together more than 35,000 participants. She previously served as a social development officer for UNICEF in the Southeast Asia office and a social scientist at WHO South-East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi. A former columnist for The Earth Times newspaper, Yoon co-edited the WHO monograph, “Gender, Women, and the Tobacco Epidemic” with Dr. Jonathan Samet. She received an AB in French literature with honors and PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan. She is married to Richard M. Smith, former editor-in-chief and president of Newsweek and current president of the Pinkerton Foundation.
