Description
This essay, written by a Korean engineering professor, explores the fascinating connection between thermodynamics and our daily lives. Thermodynamics, a branch of the physical sciences, provides a logical framework for understanding the complexities of nature. This professor, with a lifetime dedicated to applying thermodynamics to industrial advancements, now shares his wisdom in an accessible way. He connects the principles of thermodynamics to everyday experiences, emphasizing the importance of an open perspective, especially for leaders.

The book delves into why an open perspective is crucial for effective leadership, how it can guide decision-making in times of chaos, and how it fosters innovation. It's a worthwhile read that offers valuable insights into the power of open systems thinking. Unless we break down the closed boundaries of the system, we cannot transcend our narrow limitations.

For ourselves and the organizations we belong to to achieve integration and open innovation, we must first open the boundaries of our minds and thoughts, currently locked within a closed system. Numerous limitations now erect walls, forming a "closed system," before our young people. Do not settle for the narrow world of a closed dimension! Open the box of your closed mind and move toward an "open system," and you will see infinite possibilities and the power of positivity.

- The first step towards an open system: prestigious universities stepping outside the classroom.
- The Mpemba effect: Breaking down prejudices is the first step toward an open system.
- Yes, let's occasionally look at ourselves on Earth from outside the Earth.
- You think that's amazing? That's just a closed system.
- Learning is a process of going against the natural order of evolution.
- To become a prestigious university, we must break down the closed boundaries.
- Joseon dynasty under Heungseon Daewongun was a quintessential closed society.
- An open system is the fundamental strength needed for fusion, convergence, and open innovation.
- Venerable Jikji was a leader who embodied the principles of an open system.

Ch.3 The History of Open Systems | Open Sciences, Open Humanities

- Open-minded Western scientists who sought to learn from closed-off China
- Chinese science was at a level that the West couldn't match until the 15th century.
- China's astronomy, rooted in philosophy, is a prime example of an open system.
- China's three great inventions revolutionized Western history.
- Sejong the Great, who employed Jang Yeong-sil, was an open-minded monarch.
- The Jesuits served as an open bridge between Eastern and Western
- The Western scientific revolution, though later than China's, surpassed it through its openness.
- Newton, Turing, Nobel - open-minded leaders who spearheaded the Western scientific revolution
- The opening and closing of scientific systems in the East and West
- How about adding a science subject to the national civil service exam?
- Can the humanities solve the crisis in science and technology?
- The humanities must stand firm in their own place.
- Are the humanities and science, or the East and West, as distant as the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl?
- Are you saying that humanities students don't need to know science?
- Education that cannot foster dreams is a closed education.
- The crisis in the humanities in Korea is as severe as the crisis in science.

Epilogue
Author
Ki-pung Yoo(유기풍)
Born in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, in 1952, towards the end of the Korean War, author Yoo Ki-pung entered Korea University in 1970. Including his 3 years of military service, he navigated the university system and obtained a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1977. While working as a researcher at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, he was selected as a government-sponsored student to study abroad in the United States. In late 1983, he received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, specializing in "Applied Thermodynamics," from the University of Connecticut.

Upon returning to Korea in 1984, Dr. Yoo dedicated his career to teaching and research as a professor at Sogang University until 2017, focusing on energy, applied thermodynamics, and the industrialization of supercritical fluid technology. In 1990, he was selected as a promising young researcher (fellow) under the age of 40 by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany, and served as a visiting professor at the University of Oldenburg. Afterwards, he also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Washington and Purdue University in the United States.

From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Yoo served as the 14th president of Sogang University, a private institution, and from 2021 to 2024, he served as the 4th president of the Korea International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS), a public institution, thus experiencing the highest level of university administration. He is currently a professor emeritus at Sogang University. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the development of higher education in Korea, Dr. Yoo was awarded the 'Blue Stripes Order of Service Merit(청조근정훈장)' by the South Korean government in 2022.
