“대학 이공계 신입생을 위한 미분 적분학 과목에서는 변수가 한 개인 함수, 곧 일변수 함수의 미분과 적분을 다룬다. 이 책은 이런 과목을 이수한 학생들에게 변수가 두 개 이상인 함수, 곧 다변수 함수와 벡터 함수의 미분과 적분을 소개하기 위한 한 학기용 교재이다. 다변수 함수와 벡터 함수의 미분과 적분은 자연과학, 공학, 사회과학을 포함해서 많은 분야에서 널리 응용되고 있다. 이런 응용의 폭을 한정해서 제시하기 어렵고, 그 모든 내용을 이 책에 소개하는 것도 불가능하다. 이에 따라 이 책에서는 이공계 학문을 전공하는 데 필수적인 주제인 원기둥 좌표계, 구면 좌표계, 벡터, 벡터 함수와 곡선, 다변수 함수의 편미분과 그 응용, 다중 적분과 그 응용, 벡터 마당의 선 적분과 면적분,그린 정리, 스토크스 정리, 발산 정리 등을 다룬다. 그리고 각 주제와 관련된 기본적인 개념과 결과 및 간단한 응용을 소개한다. 일변수 함수의 미분과 적분을 배운 학생이면 누구나 이 책의 모든 내용을 큰 어려움 없이 이해할 수 있도록 본문의 내용은 상세하게 설명했고 많은 예제를 제시했으며, 직관적인 이해를 돕기 위해 적절한 그림도 충분히 넣었다. 몇 가지 중요한 정리에 대해서는 정확한 이해를 돕기 위해서 그 증명을 실었다. 부록에 행렬의 연산, 행렬식에 관한 기초 이론, 유용한 수학 공식 등을 실어서 학습에 참고할 수 있도록 했으며, 일부 연습문제의 해답 등을 실어서 풀이 결과를 확인할 수 있도록 했다.” - 머리말 중에서
