본 저서는 ‘지방, 학교가 희망이다’(2013), ‘지방, 학교가 변하고 있다’(2016)에 이은 세 번째 출판물로 전작들이 지방 학교들의 교육여건과 운영원리, 가능성, 그리고 학교교육력 향상을 위한 실천력과 변화에 초점을 두었다면, 이 책은 그동안의 마을교육 관련 연구들의 성과와 한계를 되짚어 보고 향후 마을교육공동체를 통한 지역 교육 협력의 법적, 제도적, 실천적 발전 방안을 제시하고자 하였다.
