18·19세기 독일철학

프레드릭 코플스턴의 11권으로 된 대저 A History of Philosophy의 제7권, 『18th and 19th Century German Philosophy(1963)』를 옮긴 책이다. 11권으로 된 기념비적인 그의 『철학사』는 고대 그리스로부터 현대에 이르는 서양의 철학사상을 망라한 것으로 광범하고 상세하게 서술되어 있다. 또한 저자가 예수회의 신부임에도 불구하고, 모든 사상가들에 대한 서술이 한결같이 공평하고 온당하고 역자는 말하고 있다.

이 책은 칸트 이후에 독일어권의 철학이 어떻게 피히테-셸링-헤겔로 이어지며 저 독일관념론의 웅대한 체계를 이루어 갔는지를 서술한 다음, 후반부에서 어떻게 헤겔 이후의 형이상학적 관념론이 해체되는가를 쇼펜하우어, 마르크스, 포이어바흐, 키르케고르, 니체를 중심으로 서술하고 있다.

프레드릭 코플스턴,표재명

말보로(Marlborough) 대학과 옥스퍼드 대학교의 성 요한 대학(St. John’s College)을 졸업하고, 1929년 로마에 있는 교황청 직속 신학교 그레고리오(Gregorian) 대학교에서 철학박사 학위를 받았다. 1925년 그리스도교에 입문하여, 1930년 예수회 회원이 되었고, 1937년 신부 서품을 받았다. 1939년부터 1969년까지 런던 대학교 철학과 교수로 재직했으며, 1970년에서 1974년까지 헤이드롭(Heythrop)대학교의 학장을 지내고, 런던 대학교의 명예교수로 있다가 1994년 2월 영국 런던에서 별세했다. 그의 주요 저서는 다음과 같다.
