제1편 [오성론]에서는, 정신의 지적인 측면으로서의 오성을 고찰하여 관념을 인상(印象)에 귀속시켜 인과율(因果律)의 객관성으로 부정하고, 또한 모든 지식을 개연적(蓋然的)인 것이라고 한다. 『인간 본성에 관한 논고』 (A Treatise of Human Nature)은 1738년 말부터 1740년까지 출판된 스코틀랜드의 철학자 데이비드 흄의 저서이다. 흄 자신이 "인쇄기에서 사산(死産)했다"라고 한 주저이기도 하다. 존 로크의 『인간오성론』, 조지 버클리의 『인간 지식의 원리론』와 함께 영국 경험론 철학의 기본적인 3부작을 이루며 총결산이 되기도 한 저작이다. 서론과 오성론(悟性論), 정념론(情念論), 도덕론의 3편의 본편으로 구성되어 있다.
