동국대학교 불교아카데미 인문한국(HK) 연구과제는 UCLA 불교연구센터와 연계해 2012년 8월 8일 로스앤젤레스 캘리포니아대학교에서 '한국불교의 국가, 종교, 사상가들'이라는 국제공동학회를 개최했다. 학술회의의 주요 목표는 한국 불교의 '영광성'을 탐구하고, 한국 불교에 대한 학제간 연구를 진행하며, 국내외 학자들 간의 학술교류를 촉진하고, 해외 우수 학술기관과의 협력을 통해 한국 불교학의 발전을 도모하는 것이었다.
총회에서 8편의 발표가 이루어졌으며, 그 중 6편의 논문이 현재 권으로 환생하고 있다. 처음의 두 논문은 의상이 화엄에 접근하는 방식과 신라에 대한 불교 전승 숭배를 각각 검토한다. 고려의 두 대승인 의천과 지눌이 다음 두 논문의 대상이다. 다음의 논문은 우리를 조선으로 데려가 조선 후기의 평신도 승려 마을을 조사하기 위해 우리를 초대한다. 최종 논문은 한국 현대 불교를 비판적인 시각으로 분석해 한국 현대 불교를 성찰한다. 위에서 언급한 바와 같이 대부분의 논문은 시대정신을 대표하는 불교사상가, 한국불교사에서 국가와 삼가의 관계를 중점적으로 다루고 있는 반면, 국가와 종교의 헌신과 관계 문제를 고찰하는 논문이 있다. 학회에서 제시된 모든 논문은 한국 불교의 보편성과 독특성을 새로운 시각에서 되돌아보는 소중한 기회를 제공했다.
