르네상스에서 근대로 넘어가는 과도기에 감각적 관찰과 귀납적 추론을 바탕으로 한 과학적 방법론을 제시하여 과학혁명에 토대를 마련한 영국의 경험주의 철학자이자 정치가. 당대를 지배하던 아리스토텔레스 철학과 스콜라철학에 반발하며, 과학적 방법론이야말로 인류를 개선할 수 있는 도구라고 믿었고, 1620년에 『신기관』Novum Organum Scientiarum을 출간하여 새로운 과학적 방법론을 제시하며 철학자로서 명성을 굳혔다. 『학문의 진보』Of the Proficience and Advancement of the Learning(1605), 『고대인의 지혜에 관하여』On the Wisdom of the Ancients(1609), 『수상록』Essays(초판 1597, 재판 1612, 삼판 1625), 『새로운 아틀란티스』New Atlantis(1624) 등을 썼다.
