Cellular Transformations serves as a reminder to all of us that both the natural and man-made worlds share a common theme - that structure (or form) and function are inexorably linked. Whether at the cellular level or in a city-scape, students in this unique ten-year project explored those interconnections. Dixit and Kim remind us that architecture and biology are not that different and that both feed our imaginations.
- JOSEPH JEZ (Spencer T. Olin Professor in Biology Chair of Biology Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor Washington University in St. Louis)
The book Cellular Transformations alters our expectations of the built environment. The design of growth mediums and the necessary structures to sustain and support living materials expands the lexicon of performative skins negotiating adverse environmental conditions. Dixit and Kim’s socially-beneficial experimentation demonstrates interdisciplinary research embedded in technical and design issues that are transferable to real-world applications. Nature informs design at the molecular level, connecting ecosystems for a healthy and beautiful future.
- HEATHER WOOFTER (Sam and Marilyn Fox Professor, Architect and Co-Design Director of Axi:Ome, Director of the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis)
