산골에서 태어나 그곳에 태를 묻고 초등학교 때 가까운 도시로 나왔다. 고등학교를 졸업하고 서울대학교 농과대학(농업생물학과)에 입학하여 서울 생활을 시작했다. 민청련, 우리교육, 한국농어촌사회연구소, 흙살림 등에서 활동했다. 텃밭을 일구고 농업, 생태, 인류문화, 퉁소 등의 주제에 대해 교육 활동하며 틈틈이 글을 쓴다. 지은 책으로 <글쓰는 농부의 시골일기, 2012>, <철따라 마중하는 텃밭, 2017>, <철따라 텃밭작물 기르기, 2021>, <호남의 상흔·자취 그리고 기억, 2022> 등이 있다.
