덧없이 흘러가는 세월 속에서 색이 바래어 가는 원고지 다발마다에서 흐려만 가는 아버님의 육필을 접할 때마다 마음 속에 이는 죄책감과 자괴심을 억누르지 못하면서 허송한 세월이 부끄럽기만 하다. 저자는 어머님께서 형제들이 영문학을 공부하는 것을 굳이 막지 않으셨던 것은, 비록 아버님만큼의 학문을 이룩하지는 못할지라도 그 그늘 밑에서 못 다 받은 아버님의 사랑과 훈도를 어렴풋이나마 느껴보라는 뜻이 숨겨져 있었음을 뒤늦게 깨달았다. 전란중에 이곳 저곳으로 옮겨 다니며 어려운 생계를 이어가시는 중에도 아버님의 원고를 담은 상자들은 늘 우리 곁을 떠나지 않았음을 새삼 기억하게 되는 것은, 어머님의 가슴에 담긴 지아비에 대한 그리움 뿐만 아니라 언젠가는 자식놈들이 아버지의 글을 읽으며 그 숨결을 느낄 날이 오지 않겠는가 하는 기대감 때문이었다는 깨달음도 뒤늦게 찾아 왔다. 서양 속언에 “늦게라도 하는 것이 아니 하는 것보다는 낫다”는 말이 있는데, 이 말을 위안으로 삼으며 뒤늦게 아버님의 문집을 내어 드리는 것에 대한 부끄러움을 억누르려 한다.
