우리는 아이들에게 ‘불안’이 아니라 ‘여유’를 체험하도록 하고 있는가? 아직 오지 않은 미래 진로와 디스토피아적 미래사회에 대한 준비를 강요하면서 아이들의 현재가 ‘불안’에 잠식되도록 하는 것은 아닌가? 그리하여 아이들로 하여금 그 불안에서 자신을 보호하고자 넓은 세상을 만나려는 ‘유목(遊牧)’보다 ‘단절’을 택해 현재, 여기의 자신에 만족하는 방어기제를 체득하도록 하는 것은 아닌가? 나와 다른 이들과 부딪쳐 나를 ‘초월(超越)’하려고 하기보다 차이를 회피하는 ‘고립’을 택하도록 하는 것은 아닌가? 세상과 나를 함께 바꾸어 나가는 능동적 삶을 향유하기보다 주어진 안전함에 매몰되어 수동적 삶에 만족하도록 하는 것은 아닌가?

이 책에서 제기하는 위와 같은 질문은 홈스쿨링을 통해서 읽게 된 삶과 교육의 딜레마적 상황이 ‘그들의’ 문제만이 아니라 학교에 아이를 보내는 ‘우리의’ 문제이기도 하다는 점에서 더욱 심각하다. 최근의 학교혁신의 흐름은 얼핏 보면 자율과 통합을 강조하며 학생들에게 여유와 유목, 초월과 능동을 체험하도록 하는 것처럼 보이지만 실상은 그렇다고 자신 있게 말하기 어렵기 때문이다. 그것은 아이에게 자율과 통합을 강조할 뿐, ‘어른’으로서 부모와 어른들이 해야 할 몫이 무엇인지 모르거나 오해하고 있는 경우가 있기 때문이다. 아이들의 ‘자율’은 진공 속에서 형성되지 않는다. 아이들의 삶과 교육의 ‘통합’은 그 자체로는 방향이 없다. 그렇다면, 어른의 몫은 무엇인가? 그 답을 다 알 수는 없지만 “가르치지 않지만 가리킨다”, “내가 변해야 아이도 변한다” 등 이 책에서 그려내는 부모들의 깨달음은 그것을 가늠하게 한다. 나는 내 삶을 통해 어디를 “가리켜야” 할 것인가? 즉, 내가 살아가는 현재는 어떤 미래를 열어 밝힐 것인가? 그 밝혀진 전망에 힘입어 아이들은 자신의 삶을 펼쳐나갈 것이다.
